Breaking News Financial Fraud Against Older Americans Peaks this Holiday Season
If this year is anything like last, baby boomers and older Americans should be on guard this holiday season. Instances of financial abuse and fraud against the elderly increased from November 2010 to January 2011, according to a recent report from MetLife, which found overall investment fraud targeted towards older Americans is on the rise.
Americans over the age of 65 lost nearly $3 billion to financial abuse from April to June 2010, up 12% from the same period in 2008, according to the report. During that time, 51% of the fraud cases reported were perpetrated by strangers, 34% by family, friends and neighbors and 12% by businesses.
But in a separate look at the holidays, MetLife reports fraud by family and friends increased to 45%.
With the baby boomer generation reaching retirement age and comprising 25% of the U.S. population, financial investment fraud is becoming a bigger and more problematic issue facing the country.
The North American Securities Administrators Association found the number of criminal complaints and enforcement actions at the state level against investors 50 years or older more than doubled in 2010 from 2009, reports The Wall Street Journal. And state security officials expected the number of enforcements actions for fraud against that same age group to hit a record this year.
Not only are the boomers older and more vulnerable, but “they tend to have more assets that they tend to rely on to live out through retirement years,” says Raj Date, Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury and acting head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This combo makes them a more “attractive pray for would be scammers.”

Breaking News Parents Sue After Teen Dies During Wisdom Tooth Surgery
The parents of a Maryland teen who died earlier this year during wisdom tooth surgery have sued the oral surgeon and the anesthetist for medical malpractice.
Jenny Olenick, a 17-year-old junior at Marriotts Ridge High School in Woodstock, Md., died in April from complications during the outpatient procedure performed on 5 million Americans each year.
“It’s so hard,” Cathy Garger, Olenick’s mother, told ABCNews.com. “She was the only one we had.”
The civil suit, filed in Howard Country Circuit Court, claims the oral surgeon, Dr. Domenick Coletti, and the anesthiologist, Dr. Krista Michelle Isaacs, were negligent and failed to resuscitate Olenick after her heart rate and blood oxygen level dropped.

News Bakersfield Attorney Reacts To Alarming Study About Teen Car Accidents
Teenagers have the highest car accident rate of any group in the United States, and a recent study reveals just how dangerous new teenager drivers can be.
Bakersfield CA accident attorney Mickey Fine urges parents of teen drivers to take note of a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Researchers found that teen drivers are about 50 percent more likely to crash in the first month of driving than they are after a full year of experience driving on their own. Furthermore, the young drivers are nearly twice as likely to become involved in an auto accident as they are after two full years of experience, according to the study.
A related AAA Foundation study used in-vehicle cameras to monitor teens when they were learning to drive with their parents. Some of the teens were caught texting behind the wheel, engaging in horseplay with passengers, running red lights, and other potentially distracting or dangerous behaviors.
The AAA Foundation recommends the following steps for new teen drivers:
Practice driving after receiving the license to ensure the basic skills are mastered.
Limit the number of passengers in the car to avoid distractions.
Limit night driving, when the reduced visibility makes for riskier driving for people of all ages.
Set rules extending beyond the state laws, such as possibly limiting highway or city driving or barring the teen from driving in inclement weather.
